The Best Sugar Free BBQ Sauce



The barbecue season has started, and it’s time to make our own recipes, so let´s make our own barbecue sauce.

Remember that when you make your own recipes, you are in full control of the ingredients you add, and for sure it will be way healthier than any purchased sauce.

We fully support the real food movement. Let´s learn to enjoy every moment around food. This homemade sugar free BBQ sauce is easy to make and delicious. An effortless DIY sauce to make from scratch.

It is a great marinade and a fantastic dipping sauce. If you have young kids or someone who doesn’t like spicy food you may avoid using cayenne pepper.

Makes about one pint.


  • 1/3 cup tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 1/2 Tablespoons honey or agave or maple syrup or sweetener (your preference)
  • 2 Tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 1/4 tsp sea salt or Himalayan salt
  • 3/4 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp pepper
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp dry mustard powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (omit if you don’t like it)


  1. In a small bowl mix all the spices and set aside.
  2. In a small sauce pan, combine the tomato paste, water, honey and apple cider vinegar. Stir well. Add the spices and stir until incorporated.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cook over low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. If you prefer a thicker sauce you can cook it for more time (30 minutes approximately).
  5. Store in the refrigerator for up to 7 days.
  6. Enjoy!
